Wapping moved top of the East Premier ‘A’ on Saturday with an impressive 2-1 win over previous leaders Harleston Magpies.
The hosts started brightly and could have taken the lead when Grant Aidoo-Nash directed a powerful shot narrowly wide of the post.
And Wapping continued to ask questions of their visitors before taking a 2-0 lead via a pair of short corners from Felix Styles.
Ollie Salvesen’s mazy dribble through the heart of the Harleston defence almost yielded a third but the visiting goalkeeper produced a fine save to deny him.
Harleston did pull a goal back themselves from a short corner to make it 2-1 at half time.
After the break Wapping stepped up a level in search of a third goal to make the game safe and were guilty of passing up good chances to expand upon their lead.
Captain Oliver Cooper was given a yellow card, reducing his side to ten men late on, but Wapping held firm to take the points and move to the summit.
Wapping coach Ryan D’Souza commented: “We’re on track to reach our objective of a top-three finish this season and we won’t get carried away with currently being top of the league.”
There was no such success for Wapping ladies, who were beaten 1-0 at home by Harlesden.
Goalless at half time, the visitors struck after the break to seal the points, with a Jo Ward strike being ruled out for being inside the ‘D’.
