Javier Hernandez’s World Cup adventure with Mexico is over, after they were beaten 2-0 by Brazil this afternoon thanks to goals from Neymar and Roberto Firmino.
After a close fought first half, Brazil opened the scoring six minutes after half-time when PSG’s Neymar was left unmarked at the back post to poke the ball into an empty net to put Brazil in front.
The world’s most expensive player then went from goal scorer to provider, as he squared for Liverpool’s Firmino, who calmly converted Brazil’s second to seal their progression to the quarter finals.
West Ham’s Hernandez started the game but was replaced on the hour mark by Raul Jimenez as Mexico were knocked out of the tournament at the last 16 stage for the seventh World Cup in a row.
The West Ham striker has featured in each of Mexico’s four games, scoring once against South Korea.
Juan Carlos Osorio’s men leave the World Cup having finished second in group F, helping to knock out current holders Germany after securing a 1-0 win in their first match of the tournament thanks to Hirving Lozano’s goal.
Brazil will now face either Belgium or Japan in the quarter finals.
