AVRAM GRANT has come out in support of under-fire goalkeeper Robert Green after the West Ham stopper's latest blunder against Chelsea on Saturday.
With West Ham trailing by one goal, Green fumbled a Didier Drogba free-kick on 17 minutes, with the ball ending up in the back of the net after Matthew Upson's subsequent attempted clearance had deflected off Solomon Kalou and bounced over the line. West Ham went on to lose the game 3-1.
The howler brought back memories of Green's misjudgement against the United States in England's first game of the World Cup in South Africa this summer. Then, the keeper allowed Clint Dempsey's long-range shot to squirm out of his grasp and bobble into the goal.
Although Grant admitted Green was disappointed after the mistake, he insisted he would bounce back.
“Sometimes things don't go how you want and you need to react well,” said Grant. “Rob is a strong character and a good goalkeeper.”
